Angels and Demons

We are just weeks away from the release of Ron Howard’s new production of Dan Brown’s novel Angels and Demons, Robert Langdon actual first adventure. Those of us who have read Mr. Brown’s novels and thoroughly enjoyed them cannot wait to go to the theatres for Robert Langdon’s latest action packed movie.

I for one am looking forward to visiting The Eternal City of Rome through this film and I wonder if it was really ALL filmed in Rome, considering The Vatican was not very happy about Rome being the site of this novel’s location

The involvement of CERN in the novel’s content was brilliant, I love how science and religion melt together. You cannot have one without the other. Evolution or not, there is a divine force behind the genius, creativity, inspiration given the human mind.

UPDATE: 05/10/09 As seen  on last week’s Entertainment Tonight’s interview with Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, the Vatican City we see in the movie is a set made of styrofoam, built in the US. The exact location escapes me as I missed that part of the interview. No problem, it looks realistic enough it will not make a difference in the story line.  History Channel is showing “Angels and Demons” Decoded tonight so, I am watching it .  It is quite  interesting the way these novels turned movies attract such attention from the media to the point of sensationalizing and elevataing them to a mystical level.   Mr. Brown’s pocket book must be growing like a just fed anaconda., ha ha ha.  No one I know would mind having that “fattening” problem, nor would I.

A couple of years after first reading Dan Brown’s first vehicle for Robert Langdon (played by Mr. Tom Hanks) the novel Angels and Demons, I am reading the book again.  This time I found it more interesting, maybe because I took my time and perused it at a slower pace than the first time.  The reading just seemed to flow with ease plus it reminded me of my stay in Rome and visiting the areas in the eternal city where the book’s story takes place.   Rome is one of the most beautiful cities I was very fortunate to travel to and with all that history to experience you cannot help but fall in love with Roma.
It’s funny that when I read DaVinci Code, I could actually visualize Vezu Fache played by Alfred Molina and Aringarosa played by Jean Reno, somewhat opposite casting, but I did see these two wonderful actors being in the movie The DaVinci Code, a film I like more each time I watch it.
With “Angels & Demons” I could not visualize the faces of the characters at all, so it is a good thing that Entertainment Tonight has been playing A&D previews and so far, I noticed that the role of Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca is played by Ewan McGregor. I believe the role of Maximilian Kohler could be Stephan Scarsgard (Bootstrap Turner of Pirates fame) although I can’t be sure. I have no idea who is the actress who will be playing Vittoria Vetra.

I have yet to find out who plays Vatican’s Commander Olivetti, Swiss Guard Commander Rocher, young Swiss Guard Chartrand, Caradinal Mortati, the reporter Glick and videographer Macri. What about Leonardo Vetra, the Pope and yes, the Hassasin – he is absolutely despicable. I cannot wait to see the movie.

It seems The Vatican is not too happy with this movie either, so the premiere of it in Rome might not happen.   I cannot figure the opposition to this movie, there is nothing in it that would even begin to weaken my faith in God.  Maybe it is the faith in the church by followers that is at stake here.   Again, Mr. Brown’s book is a very clever and entertaining novel – just a novel – which will make him even wealthier.

After reading The Da Vinci Code by D.Brown, I found his writing style very interesting and wanted to read more of his material. I have to say that Angels and Demons is a fast pased novel full of intrigue and action and it would be great material to be made into a movie. Hopefully Tom Hank’s hair will be clean and short by then or; big or; they can instead have George Clooney or Dennis Quaid to play the main character. When I first read The Da Vinci Code, I invisioned Tom Selleck as Robert Langdon because he fits the attractive professor’s type and masculine good looks and he is a such a great actor. He keeps himself fit and young looking and his portrayals come accross as genuine and so witty. I feel he could do the role justice, with ease. Had he made the Indiana Jones movies, he would be a terrific looking Indiana, too bad he had a Magnum P.I. contract he wouldn’t be released from or be a studio loaner.
Reading material such as Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, Holy Blood Holy Grail, The Hiram Key (Mr. Lomas and Mr. Knight have a winner here – all about Hiram Abif/King Seqenenre Tao’s connection to Freemasons) and many other out there that I have read – all extremely enthralling books – I find they open up a whole new wave of interest in exploring such fascinating topics contained in them, like Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, Medieval history, French history (one of my favourite world history topics), Rome and Vatican City, the Holy Land, Egypt, the Nag Hammadi scrolls, Gnostic gospets, etc., it makes one feel like what Indiana Jones would feel while researching one of his archaeological quests. You feel the excitement of the adventure without the dangers and physical risks.
And that is why I find this site’s tag line rings so true, “for the adventurers at heart” because I think in all of us, there is the adventuresome spirit of an Indiana Jones, a Howard Carter, a Lord Carnarvon, or the Librarian character of the TV movies, or Ben and Patrick Gates (National Treasure), and in reading such books we get an opportunity to experience the thrill of discovery and be explorers ourselves.UPDATE -April 11, 2008 It looks like my appraisal of this book being good material for a movie was right, I got my wish. I was checking a website (movies.com) that tells you what movies are coming out in the near future, late 2008 and next year, and, it turns out that Mr. Ron Howard is currently making “Angels and Demons” into a movie that will be released in May 2009. I am looking forward to this film as I do like Tom Hanks’ acting and I must give credit where credit is due. The more I have watched “The DaVinci Code”, the more details I have found that I had not really noticed in the first viewing and in contrast to this first experience, I did not fall asleep or felt like doing so. Also, I now find that Mr. Hanks’ portrayal of Robert Langdon has grown on me, he comes across as a calm, analytical, very pleasant and human individual, someone you could have long and interesting conversations with and learn something new. And I have to admit that I pushed the “hair” issue a little too much; my apologies to you Mr. Hanks.I must say there is something about conspiracy theories that captures my interest, passion and imagination, the more controversial the better. Can’t wait to see this movie, so it is time to start reading “Angels and Demons” again, as well as look up “the Illuminati”. Happy reading and research to you all.
