Pity about the aloes. What is shown in the carvings is the aloe vera, not the american so-called aloe, which is agave americana. The aloe vera originates in Somalia and was well-known in the Middle East a long time BC. Nefertiti and Cleopatra used it to improve their no doubt gorgeous skin. It was later taken to tropical America and grows magnificently in Aruba and elsewhere.

If you haven't seen the movie, DO NOT READ THIS BLOG, as I reveal the ending. Well, I saw the movie. It was OK but I was somewhat underwhelmed. Before going to see the film, I re-read the book so it would be fresh in my mind and once there, I was totally immersed in it so I wouldn't miss anything. For the most part, it was true to the novel except for the ending. What did changing the relationship of Sophie to Sauniere contribute to the movie? Nothing. Also, what happened to her brother? All of the sudden there are no grandfather or brother. I am sorry to say that I didn't even feel like watching it a second time and when I did; on DVD; I fell asleep. Sorry Mr. Howard, the theatre walls didn't shake, nor did my TV room's. And Tom Hanks' hair just looked dirty. Sorry Mr. Hanks. Better luck with Angels and Demons and please, don't embelish or change anything. Mr. Brown's writing is fine, just let it be.
